26 May The Wonder of the Callanish Standing Stones
Today I spent the morning at Callanish Standing Stones on the Isle of Lewis. These stones are over 5,000 years old, making them even older than Stonehenge.
They are made up of a corridor of stones leading from the North up to the main stone circle with a row of stones reaching out to the west, and one to the east (these were not part of the original stones) and a shorter corridor stretching out to the South. This means that if you look at them from above, they make the shape of a cross.
The central monolith is called “The Shaman” and it looks out towards the East … the portal from which all life comes
And the stones have been carefully & purposefully aligned with the moon so that every 19 years, the moon rises in such a way that it channels the moonlight directly down the avenue of stones (goose pimples just writing this, never mind seeing it).
About 2,000 years after the stones were first positioned, a burial chamber was erected in the centre, and although there are no records of who was laid to rest here, we can assume it was somebody of great importance.
Over the years there have been many theories posited about the purpose of these great stones…. Ceremonial Temple, Gathering Place, Parliament or Burial Ground… whatever it is, for me this circle is a portal to the sacred… the original Stargate
