“Is there any point in having ‘our story’ told as part of the ceremony when there are only the two of us?”

Over the last year, and in spite of the wee mad virus, I’ve been blessed to conduct over 20 ceremonies in beautiful locations all around Scotland.
Many (if not most) of these ceremonies had to be completely reshaped, and we went from writing a ceremony for 100+ guests, to writing a ceremony for 20, 10 and even just 5 (including the couple & I!)
One of the things that came up again and again during the reshaping was, “Is there any point in having ‘our story’ told as part of the ceremony when there are only the two of us?”
For those of you who don’t know, “our story” or “our journey” is the part in a ceremony where we take the guests on a walk through the couple’s journey together. This is where we take people back to the moment they met, the moment they fell in love, the moment they knew they wanted to spend the rest of the lives together, and the moment they made the decision to celebrate their union in a ceremony of love. It’s a very powerful part of the ceremony, and it’s a part guests love to hear and be a part of.
But here’s the thing…. I don’t think we primarily tell a couple’s story for the people in the room. I think it’s much bigger than that, much deeper than that.
In fact, I believe that whenever we come together in Ceremony, we are always in the presence of the sacred. This is what makes a Ceremony so powerful. It’s what makes people come away feeling deeply moved, sometimes very emotional and often experiencing something they can’t describe and don’t have language for.
And so when a couple’s story is spoken aloud, it’s not just heard by those in the room. It is heard and witnessed by something unseen, unheard, but very powerful. And while the guests in the room are listening, smiling and laughing, somewhere else a hand is carefully scribing your story into the endless book of love stories.
Such is the power of Ceremony.
So, “Is there any point in having ‘our story’ told as part of the ceremony when there are only the two of us?”
Aye, there definitely is ❤📜
